Some of you are going to winter holidays, while some of you are just waiting for the right week when the snow is guaranteed and then try to grab the last-minute package. I would like to now introduce you to one of my best-ever ski areas: Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau.

Before going into the details of this beautiful region, let me explain a few reasons why I still prefer Austria for winters year after year.

What is so interesting about skiing in Austria?

Having skied across Austria, Switzerland, France, and Italy, I’ve experienced the unique charm each country has to offer. Still, there are some places in the world which I haven’t skied on, and Austria has become my favorite for a number of factors:

  • Good location: You will discover that the majority of the Austrian ski resorts are located in valleys easily reached by public transport, which is worth a lot when it comes to making journeys easily.
  • Fantastic Nature: Probably the only fact in the world which has a competition and that is the great fact of having such wonderful scenery will be very hard to find in the rest of the Alpine mountains in Austria.
  • Quality and value: Austrians have perfected the art of blending the two. Many of them are family ownership which creates a personal touch and makes every stay memorable.
  • Modern facilities: Austrian resorts include modern ski lifts and perfectly prepared slopes.

The Character of the Slopes

  • Soft and inviting: The ski resort is well known for its wide and varied slopes which are great for people who are new to skiing as well as those who are looking for a laid-back skiing experience.
  • Scenic Variety: Ski between pine forests in Wildschönau or enjoy the higher snow-covered meadows in Alpbachtal.

Something for All Ski Levels

Whatever the skill, Ski Juwel has something in store.

For Beginners

If you are a novice, Ski Juwel is an excellent choice. Wide slopes of Inneralpbach are perfect for building confidence. Also, the resort has several good ski schools with qualified instructors who are patient and cater for the individual students’ needs.

For Intermediate Skiers

Intermediate skiers will enjoy a good mix of red and blue trails. It is in the Schatzberg area located in Wildschönau that offers long cruisy and scenic slopes that are enjoyable without having to engage in tough action. The interconnected valleys also mean you can ski for hours without repeating runs.

For Advanced Skiers

For seasoned skiers, Ski Juwel offers exciting black runs and some off-piste opportunities for a more adventurous experience. The Wiedersbergerhorn in Alpbach is a favorite spot, with steeper descents that test your skills. Additionally, the snow parks in Alpbach and Schatzberg area in Auffach offer fun challenges for thrill-seekers.

Other Attractions: Winter in the Alps

While the Ski Juwel is most popular for its skiing, it should also be noted that it is the perfect location for anyone wishing to discover the beauty of the Alps without their ski gear. Be it for outdoor activities, cultural experiences, or simply for leisure, there is plenty to go around.

Winter Activities

  • Snowshoeing: This activity allows for some quiet adventure while appreciating various sights. Some guided snowshoeing tours have been known to traverse through most of the untouched and unspoiled majestic Alpine panoramas. The most common routes are Wildschönau scenic valleys, which can also feature wandering through snow-coated trees and quiet flowery fields.
  • Winter hiking: Ski Juwel has more than 40 kilometers of terrain-specific, season-appropriate walking paths. All of them allow exploring the region rather autonomously.
  • Tobogganing: Let yourself be a child again and take on thrilling toboggan runs. The Schatzberg area offers a fantastic 5-kilometer sledding track that’s perfect for families and thrill-seekers alike. Some runs are even lit for nighttime tobogganing, adding an extra layer of excitement.
  • Cross-country skiing: Ski Juwel has plentiful cross-country skiing trails for visitors to enjoy Nordic skiing. There are breathtaking views. My favorite trail starts from Schönangeralm—the local cheese farm—and is ideal for anyone in search of quietness.

Local Culture and Cuisine

Just as rich and welcoming as the snowy panoramas, Ski Juwel is also characterized by the Tyrolean culture. While spending a holiday in this resort you can enjoy the warmth and generosity of the local people and try authentic mountain food. Some highlights include:

  • Käsespätzle: This is a comfort food that one should devour after a long day out in the snow because it is warm and cheesy. Made with hand-pressed noodles and topped with crispy fried onions, it is a great source of energy.
  • Gröstl: A skillet of pan-fried potatoes, bacon, and onions topped with a fried egg is delicious. It is a homely dish and exemplifies a farm-to-the-table concept in this region.
  • Kaiserschmarrn: Another signature dish from Austria, Kaiserschmarrn is a caramelized pancake that is broken apart and served with icing and a fruit compote. It is best to share—or keep all to yourself!
  • Apfelstrudel: If you happen to visit Austria, this strudel must not miss any attention because it is the most famous pastry. Rolled-out sheets of dough are filled with sweetened spiced apples and sometimes served with vanilla sauce or ice cream on the side.

Relaxation

After a day full of activities, you deserve some relaxation. Many of the hotels in the region have well-appointed wellness sections that provide saunas, steam baths, and heated swimming pools. The best way to enjoy an outdoor hot tub is to have a snow-covered mountain view while indulging in other spa services such as massages.
